The Council creates initiatives that allow local youth to become active participants and creative shapers of the arts in Lexington and central Kentucky. It provides youth with tools and opportunities allowing them to develop the skills to contribute to the process of providing art tho the community. It encourages members to demonstraate leadership among their peers and strengthen a sense of community through collaborative work.
Through the efforts of the Youth Arts Council, the community will gain a deeper understanding of the youth experience in the arts while also encouraging the cultivation of future participants and patrons of the arts.
Special thanks to the advisory committee that worked to develop a plan of action along with recruiting guidelines for the Council. Members of the advisory committee are: Sonja Brooks, Art Museum of the University of Kentucky; Chris Cathers, Kentucky Arts Council; Jim Clark, LexArts; Trish Clark, Kentucky Classical Theatre Conservatory; Stephanie Hong, Partners for Youth; Carrie Nath, Kentucky Arts Council; Joe Tackett, Lexington Ballet; Carolyn Waterbury-Tieman, School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA); Melissa Wilkeson, LexArts; and Nathan Zamarron, LexArts.
The formation of Lexington's Youth Arts Council was made possible through the generous support of JP Morgan Chase who provided the funding to develop a sustainable program that responds to the needs and aspirations of Lexington's young people.
Any questions may be directed to Nathan Zamarron (nzamarron@lexarts.org) or Melissa Wilkeson (mwilkeson@lexarts.org) or by calling LexArts at 859.255.2951.
